How was the second Death Star different from the first? What improvements did Moff Jerjerrod make to the design? According to Jerjerrod’s story in Return of the Jedi From a Certain Point of View, the new superweapon’s design exceeded its predecessor in size, power, and efficiency. Star Wars Legends says the second Death Star was one hundred twenty five percent larger, and its superlaser was able to recharge in only three minutes, compared to the first iteration’s twenty four hour recharge time. But the most important change Jerjerrod made surrounded the thermal exhaust port, for obvious reasons. Thanks to Rogue One we know that Galen Erso built a fail safe into the Death Star’s main reactor. And maybe the only way for a torpedo to reach a reactor module was through the two meter wide thermal exhaust port. For the second Death Star, Jerjerrod removed the single, larger port and replaced them with millions of miniscule tubes that stretched from the core of the station to the surface, allowing heat to escape. He also built what he referred to as choke points and fail safes into the system to prevent any chain reaction from reaching the main reactor. #starwars
